Frequently Asked Questions:

The following information assumes that SICL has returned to the SJ Delta College campus.  In Spring 2023, SICL plans to return to the campus, to offer some in-person workshops and day-tours, and continue to offer other workshops and Speaker Series via Zoom.  Registration, membership fees and parking permits will open to the public in Fall 2023.

What is SICL?

SICL (Stockton Institute for Continued Learning) – pronounced “cycle” – is a member-run and member-governed organization for mature adults in the Stockton area. It offers learning and social programs in an informal setting. SICL has operated as a partnership with San Joaquin Delta College since 1998, and utilizes the college environment and classrooms as part of the learning experience.

Why should I join SICL?

Typical SICL members are active people from all walks of life, who are concerned, curious, and have the desire to pursue new interests through lifelong learning. Being a member offers you intellectual, social, and leadership opportunities to attend interesting classes and tours… all at a very reasonable cost! Members are also encouraged to volunteer to serve on a committee or become a board member.

What Workshops are offered?

Individual workshops are developed from the suggestions of members and the availability of volunteer instructors, with several new workshops usually offered each semester.  Recent subjects have included music, art, meditation, gardening, money management, games, nutrition, genealogy, creative writing, birding, quilting and Tai Chi.  To view a summary list and detailed descriptions of current courses, click your mouse on the “Workshops, Speaker Series and Tours” link in the heading or right margin of each page.

No tests or grades are given… no college credits are earned!  Members join SICL to develop new skills, learn a new hobby and make new friends!

Where are the SICL Workshops held?

Most of the SICL workshops are held at the San Joaquin Delta College campus in Stockton. Each workshop typically meets once a week. Workshops are held Monday through Friday, and occasionally on Saturday, during the Spring and Fall semesters.

Who teach the SICL Workshops?

SICL instructors are normally local residents with special knowledge in topics of general interest to SICL members. Instructors volunteer their time to support the SICL program.

Is there a cost for parking at Delta College?

Delta College does not allow free parking in any of the college’s parking lots. You can purchase a 1-day use ticket (current cost $2 per day) or a parking sticker for your car window that is valid during an entire school semester (current cost $30 per semester). SICL members may currently purchase through SICL a semester parking sticker for $15 (a savings of 50%). If you have a valid handicap sign for your car, you are allowed to park in any of the parking areas on campus.  Parking rules are subject to change.

If I have a handicap placard, is it still necessary to purchase a parking permit?

Must I purchase a parking permit for the current semester?

No. You can purchase a daily parking permit at any of the yellow boxes in each parking lot, for $2 per day. If you do not expect to park on campus more than 7 times during the semester, buying a daily parking permit each day might be less expensive, but will also be much less convenient.

How do I join SICL?

Although SICL has an official early registration day at the beginning of each semester, you may also join SICL at any time after that date. Just click on the “Membership” link in the heading or right margin of each page to find complete information and the current registration form.

What is the cost to join SICL?

The current cost of membership in SICL is $30 per semester. In addition, SICL members are currently eligible to purchase a Delta College campus-wide parking permit through SICL for $15 (half of the normal price $30, for sale at the college bookstore). The optional SICL group tours have an additional cost and are priced individually, depending on the tour.

Is there a charge for the Workshops?

Current SICL members can attend as many workshops as they wish, most at no additional cost. Some classes might require an additional materials fee.

What and when are the SICL tours?

SICL typically offers several tours each semester. Only SICL members can participate (guests are no longer able to attend). SICL tours are very popular, and reservations often fill early. Examples of some recent tour destinations include museums, SF Bay Cruise, SF Flower & Garden Show, Winchester Mystery House, Sausalito, and spring gardens.  Click on the “Workshops, Speaker Series and Tours” link in the heading or right margin of each page for information on the current tours offered.

How do I sign up for one of the tours?

At this time, the first opportunity to register for a tour is on “Early Registration” day, at the beginning of each semester. Only currently registered SICL members are eligible to sign up for the tours, on a first come, first served basis. Members can still sign up for tours after Early Registration day if space is available, until the tour has completely filled.
